Itinerary description
Wilsons peak is a great short difficult climb up a mountain that is situated right on the border between Queensland and New South Wales. The mountain when not covered by weather presents great views back towards Mt Superbus and also back out to the Mt Barney area.
The reason why this hike is rated difficult is because of two sections both towards the end of the hike where you need to ascend almost on the vertical up rock faces.
The hike starts heading up a fire trail that comes off Spring Creek road up to a gate between two fences. You then follow the fence line or the fire trail which runs almost parallel to the fence up the mountain. The initial part of the walk is very moderate being through beautiful rainforest.
As you move further up the mountain you will start to pass stinging trees which you will have to avoid. At some point you will reach an area where you will need to via to the left and then climb up before again following the fence through to the base of the major cliff face that extends around Wilsons peak.
After veering left again you then need to climb up a crevice dodging left and right to gain foot holds before reaching a point where you can head to a lookout which looks back to Mt Superbus.
The last of the walk up the mountain is through dense forest along a well-defined trail to the normal pile of rocks on mountains in the region. Dropping down from that pile of rocks you will reach a lookout which looks North and if you crane your head, east towards Mt Barney.
The return is in general is quick and easy. This hike is as much about getting to the top of the mountain as is about having a beautiful walk through rainforest. Plan on about 4 to 5 hours to do this walk.
