Itinerary description
This is a one way walk starting in Yunomine Onsen and finishing at the Hongū Taisha Grand Shrine. You can then take the bus back to Yunomine Onsen (or walk back). The bus stop is near the entrance to the Shrine, just on the other side of the main road.
The starting point of the trail is in Yunomine Onsen after crossing a little bridge in the center of the village. It goes uphill through the forest and then down again just before arriving to the Hongu Shrine with a great view over the river valley. To see the Shrine, you have to walk up another smaller hill, where the shrine has been moved after having been flooded several times at its initial placement next to the river. After visiting the Shrine you go back again to the valley to see the world’s biggest torii gate which has been built some years ago next to the original shrine placement. You walk by rice fields and a huge river bed which was mostly dry when we went there (at the beginning of July) and being used as a parking lot. As for drinking water along the way, we found some at the small temple less than half way through the trail (see waypoint “templo y fuente”).
