Itinerary description
Physical difficulty: 2.5/5
Note #1: This trail can be started from either the village Zagore (Presunac hamlet), or the village Brseč. The trail from Zagore is marginally easier (on wider, mostly flat carriage roads) while the one from Brseč is through more "untamed" terrain and subjectively nicer, more dynamic, and with more shade.
Note #2: The main peak on this trail is Sisol (835 m), but in fact Šikovac (780 m) is more accessible and offers a better view all around.
Note #3: This is a family friendly hike all the way until you reach Učka's karst (rocky) ridge (Intersection #5). From there to Sisol it's mostly rock-hopping, less suitable for pets or children. If you want to stay family friendly all the way, skip Sisol and continue straight towards Šikovac.
--
This is a hidden gem of a trail, not often spoken about, and sparsely visited by hikers. It offers a unique experience since it takes you along the ridge of Mt. Učka which divides the Istria region on the west from the Kvarner Bay area on the east. The views are truly stunning. The mountain is full of medicinal herbs, most dominantly wild sage.
The trail can easily be modified by eliminating parts of the route, or adding to it, as there's quite a bit of intersecting paths along the way. The many paths are clearly visible on the terrain maps in the Wikiloc app or other online resources.
Bring plenty of water in the summer months, as there's nowhere to replenish and about 50% of the trail is without shade.
Read the special descriptions for more details about each waypoint.
Waypoints
Parking
Park your car somewhere one the side along this short stretch of the road. The paved road stops about 100m ahead, and is not suitable for vehicles other than the off-road kind.
Intersection #1
Continue straight; you will arrive from the right-hand fork back to this intersection on your return trip.
Intersection #4
Follow the path to "Sisol"; the durations of the hike on the signs are a bit off, it took us about 50% longer to reach the destination.
Intersection #5
Continue to "Sisol". Right next to this intersection is a natural shaft/cave called Provrtenica. It's an ideal and shaded spot to rest a bit and maybe grab a meal.
Gradac plateau
The Gradac plateau is taught to be the place of an ancient mountain settlement dating from the Iron Age (13th century BC). The camera doesn't do it justice, it's a truly picturesque place.
Intersection #8
You can take both path here, it will lead you more or less to the same place: the right fork takes you to Intersection #4, and the left fork takes you to Intersection #3.
Intersection #9
Take a left here, into the woods; this starts taking you towards Brseč.
The Brseč pond
According to some local historians, the Brseč pond is more than 200 years old and it has been marked already on Austrian historic cartography from 1821. The pond was in use as the main water source for the local community and accordingly as an important point for social gatherings.
