Itinerary description
In order to make the hike not too strenuous, take the cable-car from Zermatt to Schwarzsee. This trail description starts from Schwarzsee.
The technical difficulty is "Easy" as all paths are good hiking paths.
However, it is a relatively long trail, so for people with a good general condition.
Taking cable car to Schwarzsee helps because it gains elevation, such that first part is a gentle downhill walk.
Waypoints
Schwarzsee & Matterhorn
Starting point = Schwarzee Mid-station of Cable-car from Zermatt to Trockener Steg
Zmutt-Gletscher Valley
This picture gives a birds eye view of the trail. The trail goes straight down into the valley, and continues on the gray moraines of the Zmutt-Gletscher which you see in the distance. At the end of the moraines, we get to the Schonbiehl-hutte, which is the furthest point for this trail.
Arbenbach waterfall
After having taken a steep upward path, you reach this point. Take left, and go upward towards waterfall
Continue left of little water basin
On the picture you can see the path at the left the water basin.
Dent d'Herens and Arrow to Schonbielhutte
Go down here in direction of arrow. Follow the path right on the picture at the inner side of the morraine.
Make sure you come back to this point
At the end of the morraine take left before the little river.
continue straight on this point
Dont take the you came from last time, but now continue straight along the big rock. The rock is polished by the gletscher. Years ago the ice of the gletscher was up to this point, and polished this rock. Stones inside the ice made carvings into the rock, when they were pushed along together with the ice.
Take right on this point into the valley towards Zmutt
After a steep switch-back zig-zag path, you reach this point. Take right. (Where other people on picture are walking)
Zmutt little village
Has nice terrace to have a drink. From this point on follow the signs to Zermatt (easy).
