Itinerary description
A dramatic and fairly steep descent from the crest top of AMEZTIA through dense woods and twisted oak trees towards the fairytale and quintessentially Basque village of ZUBIETA. This walk allows one bucolic view after the next of mountain bordas and homesteads with their fruit trees and dried-stone walls. It is a (another!) photographer’s paradise! As the walk descends towards the valley floor, the pretty and mediaeval village of Zubieta comes into sight with tantalising glimpses through the trees. This village of about 200 inhabitants is well-worth visiting (see the I. ZUBIETA VILLAGE TOUR 2.5km). The village has preserved well many artefacts of Basque village life including a well-renovated water mill incorporating an interesting ethnographical museum and short audio visual on the local culture (in English!!). There are a couple of bars (which are (like all of Zubieta) a law unto their own!). Whether you stop to visit ZUBIETA or not this pretty walk leads the walker back along the banks of the river towards Ituren, past the mediaeval bridge leading towards the hamlet of AURTITZ (where there is another bar) and then through the hamlet of LATSAGA to ITUREN village square. From here there are a couple of ascents towards Ameztia. Your visit to Ituren can also be extended by the ITUREN VILLAGE TOUR 4km.
