Itinerary description
This walk offers a gentle amble around the extremely pretty and quintessentially Basque village of ZUBIETA, home to the carnival Joaldunak (just like ITUREN). This walk takes you through the outlying fields, meadows and vegetable gardens of Zubieta allowing fairytale views of the village from a distance. This is picture-postcard material! Points of interest are its distinctive mediaeval church with a bell-shaped tower, its renovated watermill with a small ethnographical museum and double arched bridge over the river. The buildings with their wooden balconies usually flowing with geraniums and the small manor house or ‘palacio’ (once an armoury) in the middle of town are well worth a visit. There are a couple of bars in the village which seem to open when they feel like it! (Typical of Zubieta!).
