Itinerary description

The Portneuf River Back Country Horsemen are improving this trail by removing creek crossing. In the spring it is hard for hikers to keep their feet dry.

The trail along the creek bottom is very pretty. There is a lot of variety of creekside foliage. A little higher up the sides of the valleys, maple trees mix in with old-growth Douglass Fir. Along the McKee Creek there are a lot of mature Elderberry plants. I hope this summer that I will have time to learn the names of the shrubbery a little better.

On the McNabb Creek, the trail climbs out of the valley after 1.75 miles. On the McKee Creek Side, the trail leaves the creek bottom after about two miles. Total elevation gain on the loop is 2,140 feet. The loops total distance is more than 7.5 miles.

The landowners are part of the Access Yes Program so be sure to fill out the information box by the sheep corals. There is a camping spot that can be reached by car just beyond the sheep corrals on McNabb Creek. There is no good camping spot further up the trail. However, on McKee Creek, there is a nice camping area clear up the valley just before the trail turns to climb up the mountain. It is a nice place for scouts to camp overnight.
