Itinerary description
Long forgotten are the Chinese who dug this horizontal shaft mine, in sight of another mountain nearby called "Chinks" peak until its name was changed to chinese peak. They came for gold in the 1860s, made up 28.5% of Idaho population by 1870s, and were driven out by 1900.
Everybody like to poke around a mine. This one has a gate that is often vandalized. Not much to see inside the tunnel. The mine was bored into rock and only goes back 20 ft. A small stream flows out.
The trail is an old road and probably used at times by ORV riders. Parking is limited at this end of Pocatello Creek Rd. Do not park close to driveways. The road does go through five pieces of private property so obey any signs you see. The loop part of the ride is on BLM land.
