Itinerary description
This is perhaps the most desirable ride in Grand Teton National Park. You will need a Coggins lab certificate, a health certificate and Brand Inspection to get into Wyoming, and the Park. Use recreation.gov the first Monday of January at 8 AM to get a permit reservation for the group campsite below Holly Lake (only campsite for horses).
After 1/3 of permits are scheduled then the rest go to first come, first walk-ins at the Craig Thomas and Colter Bay visitor centers or at the Jenny Lake Ranger Station. Good luck trying to get a permit that way.
I was hoping to go on this ride so I drove up to the Craig Thomas Visitor Center and was the first in line that morning but could not get the horse camp in Paintbrush Canyon. Someone had eather reserved in January or reserved it on a multi day trip.
However, I had a plan B, which was to then ask for the horse campsite in Granite Canyon. I was able to reserve that campsite. I used this campsite for the Bear Creek to Game Creek overnight ride. It was September and when we rode into the area where we thought the campsite should have been we could not find it, so we just camped at the next campsite that we came upon. There wasn't anybody using any of the sites that late in the season. The next morning we packed up and in about a half a mile came upon the "Horse Campsite."

The permit office uses the Group Site below Holly Lake. If you are first in line at the permit office the day before your trip, you only have a 50% chance of getting the camp. Therefore call in for a permit in early January.
