Itinerary description
This is an interesting ride. It is about 16.5 miles long and has 3368 feet of climbing. The horse fatigue factor would be calculated as 8.9, a hard ride. Obsidian rocks were seen on a section of the trail that climbs up to the side of Hominy Peak. On the next section of the trail from Hominy Peak to Jackass Pass, there was a good view down into Conant Basin where there was a marshy lake. (As a cross-reference, the trail to Hidden Lake passes through Conant Basin.) Right after Jackass Pass, we ate lunch on the top of a basalt cliff that overlooks the South Boone Creek drainage.
After lunch, there was a fairly easy stretch going north below Survey Peak. The rocks are probably made of sedimentary volcanic ash that is sculped by weather into interesting shapes. Shortly after that, we descended a very steep and rough section of switchbacks that dropped from 8000ft to 7400ft in half a mile. The rest of the way out was rugged due to erosion, rocks, roots, and brush. It was also getting warmer as we lost altitude and the trail was dustier.
