Itinerary description
The ride, one way, is more than eight miles long and includes 4000 ft of climbing. The trail is rocky and barefoot horses get sore. Total fatigue score calculation (16.2 miles/3 + 3950/1000) equals 9.4. The top lake is at 9,500 ft elevation. The trail was safe and well maintained.
But the ride is worth it. The lakes are pretty. The trail follows the creek the whole way, and the high mountain scenery was spectacular.
Next time, I think I will bring a packhorse and stay overnight. There were really nice camping spots at the first lake, plus there was grass for the horses. We did the trip in mid-July.
