Itinerary description

Apart from all the garbage in the trees of the river banks beautiful rivers for kayaking; not 100% natural but lots of nature to experience; you can watch many birds and even countless turtles at the river banks if you’re attentive; the Gogyo River and upper Kokai River are quite fast with some short class 1 rapids, only at one spot there is a class 2 rapid where you should be very careful; the rest is easy to paddle; to get to the starting point walk approx. 1.5 km from Shimodate Stn. where you can find a perfect place to assemble your boat an get in; the exit is about 200 m before passing the highway bridge, from there, you have to walk approx. 2.7 km to Mitsuna Stn.

Class 2 rapid!

This photo is taken after passing the rapid; if the water level is about the same like today keep left when passing and you’re fine (don’t pass on the right side!); during low water level I assume it’s better to walk your boat through the middle

Garbage in all trees of the river bank…

It’s a shame that even in the country side there is garbage everywhere and Japanese are so proud of caring about their environment, keeping the country clean - to my experience they don’t at all.
