Itinerary description
Makronisos is a lovely place with a great scenery and surely a place to visit!
This was the total round trip of Makronisos returning from the starting point, but I recorded as much as my mobile battery allowed that day. My initial intention was to end this trip at about 27km distance (see picture "A") which was something feasible for me, but I couldn't manage to find second transportation for getting the kayak from the end point of picture "A" to the start point so I was forced to do the round trip. I would strongly recommend to anyone attempting this trip not to do the round trip as it is exhausting! It took all day from early morning till late night and ended up being a total of 41,35 km.
In the case of the round trip one should take in account of the specific equipment necessary for that trip. The night kayaking requires lighting for safety reasons. The temperatures during night drop noticeably so one might need to make plans for that too. Long trips like that should start at the first light of the day and end at a reasonable point where the amount of fatigue doesn't exceed the point that is safe for any person's standards and fitness.
In any case any such trip is best done by a company of more than one kayaks for safety reasons!
When attempting a long trip make plans for for the best possible weather. In my case this was a maximum 3 Beaufort, but it mainly varied from 0-2 Beaufort which was very good for my kayak. Higher winds would be a problem for both my experience in the particular kayak and the fatigue caused by the distance.
Finally this is a commercial ship passage and crossing from the main land to the island requires caution. Online one can find written timetable of the biggest ship passage.
Enjoy ;)
