"The most beautiful sea trip in the world". This is how the famous Loney Planet travel guide referred to the route traveled by the ships of the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten. From Kirkenes, on the Russian border, ships travel the distance that separates it from the Hanseatic city of Bergen.
If singular is the route, even more so is the way to travel it. Nothing is further from a cruise to use, those large mastodons, floating cities, which landed at the same time thousands of people in their ports. Some have called it anticrucero.
In Norway it is known as the Coast Express. At the end of the 19th century, it was thought that the easiest way to connect to the old ports of the Norwegian coast, inaccessible by land for much of the year, was the sea, and they created a regular line of boats. For many years now, this route between Kirkenes and Bergen has been covered in six days by a total of 12 ships, which travel 34 ports. The approach of the shipping company has not changed since its founding, nor does its public want it to do so. In six days the ship travels day and night, with stops that range between fifteen minutes and three hours. To the passengers of the "cruise" that make the whole route, some even round trip, they are added those that make small sections. One morning you can meet a couple of backpackers who have climbed between two ports, or with a group of retirees, who wait to make a stretch patiently waiting to board protected with their umbrellas. While the ship's crane climbs aboard planks, destined to some remote port.
The day passes navigating through idyllic landscapes, next to fjords that seem close at hand and little red houses. In some of its stops we visit unforgettable places: Hammerfest and the North Cape, the Lofoten Islands, a natural paradise, Trodeheim or Tromso cities of past Viking hidden among mountains. And of course, Bergen, where everything travels by sea to Norway arrives. If we like salmon we will have succeeded. The ship serves it at breakfast and somehow at every meal, and caviar. That yes, we will pale with the price of drinks on board, common to all Norway.
This cruise is attended by people from all over the world eager for an experience different from mass tourism. And, a final tip, if those travelers who want to evoke the cruises of other times choose the MS Lofoten. It is the smallest and oldest boat in Hurtigruten. At the entrance we receive a white bear skin. It has the size so that all passengers know each other and to be able to enter small fjords. When we cross the imaginary line of the Arctic Circle, we will not want to be anywhere else.

First stop of the ship. Stresses the Fort, an octagonal construction, of 1737, perhaps the only one in the world that has not had to make a shot, except to make saves to the disk of the sun that returns in January. The sun here is below the horizon from November 23 to January 21, On the other hand, it passes 79 days without setting, from May 16 to July 29.
