Itinerary description
A mountain bike cycle ride mostly on free traffic paths.
We parked the car at Butley Village Hall where this route starts, cycling on a quiet lane to Chillesford. Here we went off road following the Suffolk Coastal Path signs. This is the Orford Loop. It is a single footpath but can be cycled. This took us all the way to the River Alde, near Orford. We then continued cycling on the river wall having a nice view of the distant WWII bunkers and lighthouse.
Orford is a good place to stop and walk around. There are many pubs and a nice, relaxed feeling. We left Orford following the 41 Cycle Route. Soon we turned off on a dirt track to Sudbourne Woods, passing a nice, lonely church.
From these Woods we cycled to Tunstall Forest to join the Viking MTB Trail. This is a purpose built one-way cycle track that is a real pleasure to complete. At one point, you will pass a mock Iron/Stone Age settlement. This is a work in progress as every time I have passed by, there seems to be more and more added to the buildings and facilities.
On leaving Tunstall Forest, our way crosses tracks beside arable fields all the way back to Chillesford, where we re-join the original way back to the start at Butley.
