Itinerary description
Done in the July 2023 heat wave. Bottle stores were sparse and hard to spot, grassy areas with shade trees provided some good rest stops.
The track can be extended to the east by connecting to "Explore East of the Dengshahe (Sand River), visit Wangjiazhuang (Princely Village)."
Long overnight touring along this coast not yet developed for foreigners but becomes more popular with locals.
Waypoints
Highway road conditions
Mostly new and well maintained as in photo, some older sections without shoulder markings are knobbly pavement with a few potholes. Sparse traffic.
Major river crossing
River at low tide. This is the end waypoint on return, as it was over 34 deg in July 2023, battery almost finished, and had to stop on grass under shade trees by bridge to wait for temperature to drop. The track will be approx 50 km total on return to Jinshitan.
Arrive Industrial fishing town
Very typical of the small towns and villages along this coast.
Matoe Fishing Village
Very interesting side road, views over the offshore aquaculture zone, passing through antiquated infrastructure serving the main fishing fleet.
Matoe; the fishing docks
The main docking area for the local fishing fleet. 码头商店 (mǎtou shāngdiàn - Matoe Store). Air quality is good, however there is fog or mist coming off the Yellow Sea.
Fishing infrastructure continues along shore
Not a tourist beach. Black, oyster encrusted rock formations are picturesque. Industrial fish processing. Pervasive fishey smell.
Central dock
Summer market along the dock with simple food canteen, cold soft drinks, other refreshments. Busloads of local tourists are arriving for popular small boat sightseeing tours from end of dock.
Fishing town continues to north
Green sand beach picturesque but not for swimming. Pervasive fish smell throughout town. A few added photos from a return cycle on a clear sunny day.
Fishing village, photos along coast
The Japanese Second army landed somewhere along this shore in early 1904 and marched west to Jingzhou/Nanshan and Port Arthur to defeat the colonised Russians. There appear to be remnants of old fortification across the harbour.
Inland views from market Village
In mid-morning the main street becomes a bustling market with dozens of fruit, vegetable, & meat stalls and canteens along both sides, traffic passes through with difficulty. Connects to a short mountain bike route continuing further east along the coast.
Exploring a minor road along coast
This minor coast road is mostly paved with a mountain bike segment near the end. There is no exit. Lots of interesting sights.
Back on main highway.
Minor road explored along seacoast here was interesting, but no exit. Backtracked to main highway and started climb to south.
Sea cucumber research station.
Not sure if tours to research station can be arranged. This minor paved road is hilly and may offer scenic spots further to the south near the point. A picture of the peninsula is attached, taken from several km to the east. It shows a low central area flanked by high hills with sea cliffs to the south. Satellite view suggests hiking potential.
Village
On a minor road through a small village. Interesting vintage housing. Not yet touched by new China development. Oyster shell tips.
