Itinerary description
Enduro Iceland 2015 spring celebration trail. This scenic trail starts in Kaldársel with a soon to follow hike up Mt. Helgafell. The latter downhill stage is an unconventional path down, it is steep and somewhat dangerous. Too much acceleration and the brakes will not help much thereafter. After Helgafell the path leads across a pahoehoe lava-field to Mt.Búrfell, a volcanic crater which erupted some 8000 years ago. From the crater top you descend through the former lava flow channel (Búrfellsgjá). You exit the channel half way down and follow a grassy single-track leading to Löngubrekkur in Heiðmörk and eventually into Vífilsstaðahlíð and all the way to Vífilsstaðavatn. On this track you will find ever changing terrain, ash, sand-stone, lava-fields, rocky, muddy, rooty, grassy, gravel, the works. There is no access to water along this trail but plenty of sharp rock waiting to tear through your sidewalls. The trail is shared with hikers and please remember that hikers have the right of way, smile and be polite :)
