Itinerary description

Start near the dam of the presa Allende. You can park at the start point or alternatively at the end point if you don’t want to ride up the big hill at the end on the way back. But riding along the dam is pretty cool.

Not long into the ride, you’ll encounter the tunnel which is just under a kilometer long. Bring a bike light or headlamp to go through the tunnel. Vehicles take turns going through the tunnel, one direction only, so make sure the coast is clear!

Bike along the road and enjoy the campo scenery. It’s super green and lush in the summer, and while drier in the winter, still nice and green along the valley where the Rio Laja runs.

The road will take you to a village that is newly cobblestoned. Go through the town until you see a sign for el Sabino with an arrow to the left. Lock your bikes up and walk to the tree or try to ride up….good luck!

The tree is the second largest tree in Mexico. It’s approximately 450-500 years old and feeds from the underground manantial. The trunk is so wide, it takes about 15-18 people to circle it.

Ride back the same way you came. At the gravel parking area at the end of this map, you can walk down to the river, explore, have a picnic. There’s evidence of a lot of visitors with trash and debris. If you have a chance, pick up a bag of trash to carry out.

The route is pretty flat except for the downhill from the dam to road, and uphill to the community of la Huerta near the tree. The road is paved in parts but mostly packed dirt road. Some potholes to navigate, but pretty even.
