Itinerary description

A circular route using forest tracks and a section of the old "Paddy Line". A short section of approx one mile beyond Loch Skerrow is rough track, not currently used for forest traffic and somewhat overgrown.
Be aware of the possibility of traffic on these tracks, particularly on the Raiders Road.

Red Deer Paddock.

Worth slowing down for a look at the deer. Some of these animals are quite tame and will approach the fence if you are patient.

Otter Pool.

With a bit of good luck you might get this area to yourself. A great place to cool the feet on a hot day as the Black Water of Dee flows over the shelving granite slabs.

OS maps show this as a ford. Not a good idea on a MTB!

Turn off the Raiders Road and follow Horn's Avenue (sign post) uphill!

Join the old 'Paddy Line'

The Dumfries-Stranraer railway line axed by Beeching in the 1960's, known as "The Paddy Line". If you find it troublesome cycling along the old ballast, a forest track runs parallel and is easy to access.

Join N7 Sustrans Off-Road section.

The N7 route runs from Gretna to Wick. This off-road section joins Gatehouse of Fleet with Glentrool Village.

To Loch Grannoch Lodge

A dead-end track leading to Loch Grannoch Lodge. Worth a short detour at least to the top of the hill. Great views along the length of the Loch. If you fancy a cold swim the sandy beech at the south end gives easy access to the water.
