Horta de Sant Joan - Deltebre, Via Verda Val del Zafán tramo Terra Alta, Baix Ebre y camí natural Tortosa-Deltebre

Recorreremos una parte de esta Via Verda saliendo de Horta de Sant Joan y pasando por Bot, Prat del Compte, Pinell de Brai, Benifallet, Xerta, Aldover, Tortosa, l’Aldea y Deltebre.

El primer tramo de la Via Verde que dejamos para otro día es el que va de Valdealgorfa a Horta de Sant Joan.
Dejamos un coche en Deltebre en el aparcamiento de la zona de embarque de los cruceros por el Ebro, justo frente al restaurante Casa Nuri y a una zona de tiendas para turistas. A primera hora de la mañana suele estar vacío pero en cuanto abren los bares y comienzan las excursiones por el río el aparcamiento se llena a rebosar. Con otro coche y las bicis nos dirigimos a Horta de Sant Joan. Gràcies Chachen por llevarnos!

La salida tiene dos partes muy claramente diferenciadas:
- Parte 1: Horta de Sant Joan a Tortosa. Transcurre por la Via Verda y es muy fácil. Es bajada suave todo el rato y la bicicleta va prácticamente sola. Mayoritariamente asfalto. Zonas arboladas de montaña.
- Parte 2: Tortosa a Deltebre. Por caminos del Delta de l’Ebre entre campos. Es todo llano, más monótono y expuesto al sol. Caminos de tierra y asfalto.

Realizamos la salida en un día con una meteorología muy poco habitual para Agosto, mínima 17, máxima 25. No serían extrañas máximas de 35 en esta época y sobre todo la parte 2 hubiera sido otro cantar.

Salimos de Horta de Sant Joan donde hay una pequeña zona de aparcamiento al lado de la antigua estación que nos permite montar las bicis con comodidad.

El entorno es muy bonito y la primera cosa que nos sorprende son los muchos y largos túneles que comenzamos a atravesar. La mayoría de ellos disponen de iluminación aunque no todos. Es imprescindible llevar buenos focos de lo contrario la oscuridad en el interior de alguno de los túneles es absoluta.

Justo pasar Bot y a la salida de un túnel paramos sobre el río Canaletas para admirar las vistas. Nos iremos cruzando con el Canaletas de vez en cuando.

Las antiguas estaciones están bastante destartaladas excepto quizás Benifallet que está restaurada y hay un bar. (www.estaciodebenifallet.com)

Vamos avanzando y pasado Benifallet la ruta transcurrirá paralela a la C12 y al Río Ebro. Buenas vistas del río.

Un poco antes de llegar a Xerta pasamos por el ‘assut de Xerta’. Es una mini presa de la que nacen los dos canales laterales del Ebro bautizados curiosamente Canal de l’Esquerra y Canal de la Dreta (Izquierda y Derecha) y que alimentan más adelante las zonas de regadío del Delta de l’Ebre.

Llegamos a Xerta. Una bonita población en la que entramos para dar una vuelta y ver como la gente se baña en las aguas del Canal de la Dreta. Con más tiempo sería también recomendable visitar la iglesia en la que hay una escala hecha con azulejos que indica el nivel que alcanzaron las aguas en las distintas inundaciones que ha sufrido la población.

Llegados al punto que marcamos como ‘desvio’ la Via Verda continúa durante otro km aproximadamente pero aquí tomamos el camino a lo largo del Canal de la Dreta que nos permite entrar en Tortosa sin callejear.
Cruzamos el Ebro por el antiguo puente del ferrocarril y contemplamos la anchura del río.

Paramos en el Club de Rem de Tortosa donde hay una zona de descanso pegada al río que nos permite disfrutar de una de las pocas sombras que vamos a encontrar en lo que nos queda de camino y de paso recuperamos fuerzas.

Continuamos siguiendo el Canal de l’Esquerra durante un rato hasta que nos alejamos de él para buscar los túneles que cruzan la vía del tren y la autopista y nos llevan al municipio de l’Aldea. Paramos en l’Ermita de la Mare de Déu de l’Aldea donde a parte de la ermita con su torre y los restos del Castell de l’Aldea encontraremos también sombra (¡!) y una fuente.

Vamos avanzando por caminos entre campos en los que poco a poco los frutales van dejando paso al cultivo dominante en el Delta de l’Ebre, el arroz. Si nos fijamos en las acequias podremos ver pruebas de la invasión de caracoles gigantes y cangrejos de río de la que se quejan los campesinos.

La mayoría del trayecto se realiza por caminos o por carril bici compartido. Habrá que tener cuidado con los pocos vehículos que vayamos encontrando. Hay también algún tramo corto de carretera en el que hay que extremar las precauciones pero es muy corto y nos dirigimos en seguida hacia la orilla del río para cruzar Deltebre por el paseo fluvial. Lo que veremos enfrente no es el otro lado del río sino la Illa de Gràcia.

Pasaremos delante del antiguo transbordador de Sant Jaume d’Enveja que se utilizaba como barcaza para cruzar el río antes de que se construyera el puente.

Dejamos el río y llegamos a un punto donde debemos fijarnos en un cartel explicativo que nos mostrará como tomar el carril bici que va paralelo a la concurrida carretera de Amposta. El track del GPS aquí puede ser engañoso así que conviene estudiar el cartel. Se trata de un caminito a ratos con restos de asfalto que transcurre entre la carretera y el Canal de l’Esquerra.

Finalmente llegamos al embarcadero de donde salen los cruceros del río y donde hemos dejado el coche.

We go over a part of this ‘Via Verda’ departing from Horta de Sant Joan and passing through Bot, Prat del Compte, Pinell de Brai, Benifallet, Xerta, Aldover, Tortosa, l’Aldea and Deltebre.

The first leg of this ‘Via Verda’ goes from Valdealgorfa to Horta de Sant Joan and we leave it for another day.

We park one car at the Ebro river cruise parking just in front of Casa Nuri restaurant and the tourist shops. It is normally empty early in the morning but it will be packed up as soon as the bars open and the cruises begin to operate. We take the other car and the bicycles and off we go to Horta de Sant Joan. Thank you Chachen for the ride!

The journey can be divided in two very different parts:
- Part 1: Horta de Sant Joan to Tortosa. It goes by the Via Verda and it’s very easy. It’s gentle slope down all the way and the bicycle goes effortlessly. Mostly asphalt. Mountain area with many trees.
- Part 2: Tortosa to Deltebre. Trails and roads of Delta de l’Ebre through the fields. Flat, monotone and exposed to the sun. Compact dirt and asphalt.

The meteorology the day of the trip is very unusual for August, min 17, max 25. Max 35 wouldn’t be rare in this time of the year and part 2 would have been a different animal in those conditions.

We start in Horta de Sant Joan where a small parking area besides the old train station helps us putting the bikes together comfortably.

The surroundings are very beautiful and as we move on we are surprised by the high number and the length of the tunnels we begin to go through. Most of them are illuminated but not all. Good head lights are essential for it’ll be pitch black inside some of the tunnels otherwise.

Just passing Bot and coming out from a tunnel we stop to enjoy the view of the Canaletas river below with which we will be coming across every once in a while.

The old train stations are pretty ramshackle with the exception of Benifallet which has been restored and there is a bar. (www.estaciodebenifallet.com)

We go on and after Benifallet the route will follow alongside the C12 road and the Ebro river. Good views of the river here.

We pass the ‘assut de Xerta’ just before entering Xerta. This is a mini dam that gives birth to the two lateral channels of the Ebro river amazingly called ‘Canal de l’Esquerra’ and ‘Canal de la Dreta’ (Left channel and right channel) and supply water for irrigation of the fields further down at the Ebro river delta.

We arrive at Xerta. It’s a beautiful town and we go for a stroll to see how people swim in the ‘Canal de la Dreta’ waters. Having spare time it’d certainly be recommendable to pay a visit to the centre with the church and the tile made scale showing the levels reached by the water during the different floodings the town has experienced along the years.

We arrive at what we have marked as ‘desvio’. The ‘Via Verda’ continuous on for another km but we take the road along the ‘Canal de la Dreta’ that allows us to enter Tortosa avoiding its busier streets.

We cross the Ebro river using the old railroad bridge and look at the river’s width.

We make a stop at the Club de Rem de Tortosa where there is a rest area by the river offering one of the few shadow areas left in our route. We use the opportunity to recharge energy.

We follow the ‘Canal de l’Esquerra’ for a while until we deviate from it in our search for the railroad and motorway underpasses leading to the town of l’Aldea. One more stop at l’Ermita de la Mare de Déu de l’Aldea where besides its hermitage, tower and the remains of Castell de l’Aldea we will crucially find shadow (!¡) and a fountain.

As we make progress among fields and more fields the orchards slowly give the way to the main produce of the Delta de l’Ebre which is rise. If we pay attention and look in the ditches we will see proof of the giant snail and crayfish plague farmers complaint about.

Most of the route goes through trails and non exclusive bicycle lanes. It will be necessary to be careful with the few vehicles we will cross. There is also a short piece of road in which we will need to be extremely precautious but it is very short and we will immediately head towards the river to cross Deltebre using the river side walk. What we will see in front of us across the river is not the other side but the river island of Illa de Gràcia.

We will pass by the old barge ‘transbordador de Sant Jaume d’Enveja’ used to go across the river before the bridge was built.

We leave the river side and get to a point where we must pay attention to a sign by the road that shows how to take the bike lane along the very busy Amposta road. Following the GPS track can be tricky here so it is important to study the sign. It’s an old trail mixture of worn out asphalt and dirt that runs between the road and the Canal de l’Esquerra.

Finally we arrive at the Ebro river cruise pier where we left the car.
