Itinerary description
An intriguing narrow overgrown hiking path extends up to the rugged terrain at the south end of the Peninsula, with historic military ruins. This was Not Explored and may need security clearance.
Note: Bicycle touring along this coast and up the Yalu River is locally popular but has not yet been developed for foreigners (in 2023). There are language, culture and accommodation obstacles. For example, not many places are Registered with Authorities to accept foreign overnight visitors. Detailed fore-planning with a Mandarin/Dongbei-hua speaking helper, preferably a co-traveler, is probably a good idea. Apparently camping is not restricted?
Waypoints
Along the main coastal road
Heading East on a medium-width two lane paved shoreline road with good shoulders. Light traffic. Perhaps reminiscent of the California North Coast route, but decades back in Steinbeck's time.
Traditional Fishing Village
Along the central track through a traditional, small, undeveloped fishing village. There are plenty of other small village roads around here, with apparent sea access. An ancient Chinese naval fortification remains unrestored. The Japanese landings during the Russo-Japanese War (1904) and the occupation of Manchukuo (1930's) occurred over this section of the Liaoning coastline.
Sea Cucumber Resources Research Center
Not sure if tours can be arranged. Probably with help and official permissions. A large facility.
Start of STEEP hill segments
Short but very difficult hill segments from here towards the south. Mostly good pavement. DESCEND AT CONTROLLED SPEEDS, tight switchbacks. Panoramic views of aquaculture environment.
Hillcrest
South facing views of aquaculture and the rugged headland at the end of the Peninsula.
Lookouts over Aquaculture operations
Photos taken during stops along controlled steep descent.
End of the road access
The track ends at an heavy iron gate, past which a narrow hiking trail continues up the headland at the south end of the Peninsula. There is also a steep path down to beach, pleasant but it's not a tourist beach. Oyster, mussel, and scallops shells in abundance.
Hiking trail to South peak.
Although gated, a narrow overgrown hiking path passes around the gate. The highland trails show on Satellite view, including ominous sea cliffs. A warning sign on gate translates : 'destruction of military reserve camps will be held accountable...'
