Itinerary description

I absolutely love this route. I did the route on my mountain bike but it could also be done on a touring bike. The first part from Málaga to Almogia is basically all uphill and with spectacular views. Almogia- a white village (pueblo blanco) is the cradle of the VERDIALES- folk music from the montes of Malaga that probably dates back to Phoenician times. Stop off in the village for breakfast and have a walk around. Continuing on the route, you will turn off to the left and enjoy a long stretch of narrow country road of farmland and donkeys to cheer you along . It is a very wide open space with no shade (nor shops!) basically until you get to Alora, so make sure you have lots of water and re-apply your sunscreen. At Alora I stopped on the outskirts of the town and had a nice lunch at a local Venta- a roadside country restaurant. If you have time to venture into the white village of Alora, it is well worth a visit if your legs can still stand the very steep climb up to the Castillo de Alora which overlooks the whole village and the Guadalhorce valley. One curious fact about this village is that it has the most STOP signs in all of Spain! Not something you want to see climbing up those hills! ;-) After Alora, continue along the road to Pizarra, another white village. Here you can put your bike on the Cercanias train to get back to Malaga. The trains are usually one per hour. Click on the following link to see the schedule: shorturl.at/cdnoA
