Itinerary description
This is a circular route only suitable for mountain bikes. Much of it uses dirt tracks, country lanes and paths. As such, it is a wonderful way to safely see this delightful part of Suffolk. Also, there are several very attractive pubs on the way.
Starting at the Red Lion Pub in Martlesham, initially follow Cycle Route 41. Bear left at the first junction to reach the historical Saint Mary’s Church where the route then continues along field edges to reach a minor road heading towards Waldringfield.
Between Waldringfield and Hemley the way follows excellent farm tracks at higher elevations with outstanding views to the left across the river Deben.
Beyond Kirton Creek the river wall is followed all the way to Felixstowe Ferry. This is a bumpy but enjoyable section. There are plenty of eating and drinking opportunities at Felixstowe Ferry and also a boat to Bawdsey which is another lovely area to explore.
On the return leg you have to repeat about a mile before turning inland on another good farm track alongside King’s Fleet. Many more minor roads and country lanes follow before reaching Newbourne. Upon reaching the excellent pub here, turn left and pass through Newbourne Springs Nature Reserve, another highlight of the day. A farm track then joins the Newbourne Road which is followed all the way back to Martlesham.
