Itinerary description

This is bike trail 603 on the official Istria Bike website: "Stara ferata" (eng. Old railway). We cycled with a slight modification, following the trail in reverse. If you follow it as designated on the site, you will have a hellish uphill part to go; we went in reverse, where you go with a very, very slight ascent for about 12km, and then a steep descent, followed by a last steep ascent to complete the loop.

Note: the trail is mostly small gravel from Motovun until Vižinada. Up until that point it's family-friendly. From Vižinada there's larger and looser gravel in the trail, and it requires some skill to descend. The final ascent to Motovun is also pretty difficult (we had to push the bikes at times; professionals would probably have it easier).

The trail starts at the free parking place near beneath Motovun. From the parking, go onto the main road and almost immediately turn right following the signs for Parenzana - an old (now defunct) railway going from Trieste to Poreč (in the 1900s to 1930s).

Then, you mostly go straight on intersections, following the well-marked signs.

The setting is mostly forest, very nice scenery. The trail is shaded about 50-60% of the time, the rest is without shade so take lots of water in summertime. We took 5L for 2 persons.
