Itinerary description
The knowledge of the Asterousia is, of course, not complete without a visit to Cape Lithino. The tour is short, but very dense with important discoveries. The most worthy places are generally marked by the presence of a church or a monastery. The track starts precisely at a monastery, the wonderful Odigitria, where at evening the atmosphere becomes magic, with all the local people gathering to chat and rest.
Next comes Agios Eutichianos, which is also an optimal viewpoint on the islands of Paximadia. A long undulating traverse leads to the final ascent towards the top of the rock mass dominating the cape: here one finds two churches, the old and enchanting Timios Stavros, and the somewhat modernized Metamorphosis. In the vicinity one finds the ruins of a German building of the Second World War, and a gorgeous viewpoint on Cape Trachili, a spin-off of Lithino, reaching further south.
The descent to the cape allows the discovery of further, previous hidden cliffs. From the cape I had a very long swim to the beaches of Martsalo and Agiofarago. The problem was to come out of the water, operation which took me no less than one hour, since the waves had become very powerful, and I had to wait with a lot of patience the right moment to dare a landing.
It was a surprise, at that point, to meet other people: some young workers from Pigaidakia who extracted salt making the water evaporate in some natural pools. The ending of the day was, as already said, at Odigitria.
The track does not include the visit to Martsalo. It is very close to the fork that I marked, but I had reached the cave some day before following the hard way, namely, approaching by foot from the Agiofarago gorge.
