The itinerary takes place along a stretch of the ancient Trieste-Buje-Parenzo railway line, better known as the Parenzana railway. This line was of the narrow-gauge type of Bosnian (760mm) which, starting from Trieste, proceeded to the Istrian region reaching Buje and later also Porec.
The Parenzana line, with its 123 km of development, was the longest narrow gauge line between those built by the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The Emperor Francesco Giuseppe gave a strong impulse to its construction in order to reach comfortably Porec, a place where one of his cousins lived, with the motivation to import to Vienna via Trieste both agricultural products (wine and olive oil mainly) and labor.
And this is what you meet along the way: towns perched, vineyards and olive fields.
This itinerary covers the central section of the entire railway line on comfortable dirt roads; it begins on the outskirts of the village of Buje and crosses the Istrian hinterland with a difference in altitude of 700m and 62km.
