Itinerary description
This climb gained recent attention by GCN https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I3jmic7-to because the is probably one of the hardest paved climbs in the world.
Therefore, you’ll need a decent gravelbike or mountainbike with super low gears. I rode a 32 front and 51 in the back (so a 0,61 transmission) but still had to walk whenever >25% or so. Make sure your bike has brake pads that will last for the downhill, because you’ll need them.
The road surface is relatively smooth tarmac, with the occasional gutters inbetween. But further up there are mixed gravel-tarmac sections, and finally some cobbled segments near the top of the Pozza (1750m).
Because there is no nice view from the top, I choose to continue by foot from here to climb the Colma di San Glisente (2147m), covered with snow at the time of recording (March) but probably comparably beautiful in summer.
You can park your car across the road in the village of Esine, and you don’t need to bring loads of water, as there are a few taps en route with fresh mountain water.
