Itinerary description
Mountain bike only.
Stages made to fit hotel/hostel accomodation.
-San Cristobal: hotel San Cristobal 220Bs
-Alota: Cemar motel 60Bs (multiple accommodation choices, all similar)
-Laguna Hedionda: Hotel Los Flamencos 135 US$/ single
- middle of the desert 45km before L.Colorada: Tayka hotel 135US$/single
- laguna Colorada: multiple choices around 50Bs all similar (you get w.y.p.f.)
If you want to continue to Laguna Verde and Chile. You will have to ride 130km to border+ 47km to Atacama at high altitude w/o any accommodation or food/water. It is unrealistic so I took a 4x4 Toyota ride from L.Colorada to the border, the rest to Atacama is a refreshing tarmac descent.
The route is not technical, it is just loooong hours on the bike and you have to be conservative due to your performance and health at altitide. Nights are very cold and you may only survive outdoors with proper gear and exprience. So you need to plan to finish your stages by 2pm so you do not get into trouble even if you waste some time with mechanical issues or pictures.
Landscapes are breathtaking.
The toughest is not only the altitude but the soft terrain and "washbord" bumpy tracks. Some days you will average nearly walking speed. So do not underestimate the stages. Windy every day after 1pm.
I did it solo unsupported, but my advise is to do it in a group with a support vehicle which may cost 300-500$ in Uyuni. Will you contiue on to Chile or return back to Uyuni, both options require a 4x4 vehicle, so plan is advance and make arrangements before you leave Uyuni. Once on the trail there is no phone or internet past Alota. So you need to have a firm plan before you dive in the wild.
Bring lots of sunscreen
Good riding and be safe!
