Itinerary description
Volta dos Aquedutos (Tour of the Aqueducts) was last weekend's tour with my mates. The idea was to make a cultural tour mixed with some nice MTB tracks. We managed to get the best of both worlds.
In this tour you can see important landmarks and monuments of the region of Queluz and Belas:
- National Palace of Queluz (XVII c. Neo-classical and Rococo royal palace with fantastic french style gardens, often called the 'Portuguese Versailles', despite its rather smaller size).
- Gargantada Aqueduct (that used to provide water to the palace gardens).
- Old center of Belas (with its interesting square).
- Belas' Church (with the first records dating from the XIII c., this church has a not so usual Manueline portico typical from the XVI c.).
- Quinta Nova da Assunção palace and gardens (another noble palace from the XIX c. with some interesting romantic public gardens)
- some old abandoned windmills.
- a segment of a Roman road.
- the ruins of the old Roman dam (built in the III c. AD most likely to provide water to the greater city of Olisipo (roman name for Lisbon).
- a segment of the Aqueduto das Águas Livres, which overlays the original roman aqueduct in the same location of the dam and was built in the XVIII c. to provide Lisbon with its urgent need for water.
In between all this you will be blessed with some nice MTB trails and Single Tracks.
