Itinerary description

-- Byrkjefjellet -- 1046 m. -- 3,5-7 hours --

Byrkjefjellet is one of the highest mountains in the municipality of Kvam. It is located in Kvamskogen, just east of the ski resort in Eikedalen.

You can reach the top from south and from east, from Kvamsæter and from Wallemtunet. Here is a rough drawing of the trail from south (Kvamsæter):

The trail starts close to the main road, and goes through the wood. It is an easy trail to walk, not steep. When you go, the view quickly gets good towards south. After a while, you will reach a point where the trail goes flat, it will do this for a while. But the view is great in almost all directions and it's not boring. When you reach the steep hill, you're not very far from the top. This is the most difficult part and not recommended for younger children, though it's not very difficult for adults and it's not very high. Then you are on the top in front of the top. This is 996 meters high, and the best view towards south is probably here. Then, it's just about 15 minutes to the top. You can reach it from both sides, I chose the right (east) side, and I thought that was a good trail. The top of Byrkjefjellet can offer a wonderful view in all directions:
South: Tveitakvitingen, Hardangerfjorden and Folgefonna (The third largest glacier in Norway)
East: Steinskvanndalen
North: Fuglafjell
West: Eikedalen Ski Resort, the mountains in Bergen and the North Sea

Here I have taken the same trail down, but as I have said, there are several options. This trail is not recommended for winter, but I know some of the other trails can be done in the winter. This is for about July - October.
