Route made on 11/8/2018

Hardly sleeping at all due to the emotion and the intense cold, we got up at 1:30 in the morning and had breakfast together in the tent, bundled up to the eyebrows and trying to keep warm with the drinks that the Sherpas have prepared for us. We loaded with all the necessary material that we have prepared and we began to walk at night and in a row towards the east, guided by the Sherpa and expedition guide who joined us in Chukhung and with our good friend Radju. In barely a kilometer of walking where the thermometer shows -13 degrees, we leave the main route and turn left to begin the ascent on the southern slope of the mountain.

The ascent is made smoothly in a constant zigzag, but soon the progress becomes slower and intermittent due to the lack of strength of some of the team members. The lack of sleep, the altitude that makes a dent and the enormous cold begin to wreak havoc among some of us. We pass through the Advanced Base Camp from where we see several mountaineers leave, and from here we will begin to find more technical steps where the help of the hands is necessary in the occasional climb. After almost 4 hours of very hard ascent, the darkness is receding and the sunlight is illuminating the enormous mountains that surround us. The path also turns into a huge quarry that will have to be overcome until reaching Crampon Point, where the glacier begins.

Here we put on our crampons and, tied together, we begin to advance along the glacier, with the sun already falling on our heads and bouncing strongly on the ice and snow that dominates the horizon, forming wonderful postcards. We progress little by little, exhausted by the effort, to the enormous cracks that the glacier splits into enormous ice cubes that give access to the final part of the ascent. We save the main crack by ascending a 5-meter ladder that will take us to a huge glacier, where we can already see the top of the mountain and the fearsome and steep slope that we will have to overcome to reach it. We cross the glacier, and on the very edge of the slope we leave our backpacks and the excess weight to begin the ascent through the line of fixed ropes installed by guides and ropes. It took us almost an hour to climb to the upper chalk, from where we only have a few meters of ridge left to climb to reach the top.

Exhausted but exultant, we look around us, the 9 of us squashed together on the small platform that forms the top and incredulous at the feat we have just achieved, surely the highest point that most of us will reach in our lives. The immense mass of Lhotse that appears before us to the north, hides the peak of Everest that is just behind, but all around us are snow-capped mountains in one of the most amazing landscapes we have ever seen. We see all the mountains where we have passed, plus some more that have appeared when reaching the altitude of 6,189m. in which we find ourselves. As our guide rushes us, we take the necessary photos to immortalize the moment and begin to descend.

The descent will be done by a line of ropes parallel to the ascent, rappelling carefully to the glacier. Once down, we take our things and return little by little, a little upset and sad about an accident that we have witnessed, until we reach Crampon Point. We take off the crampons and we will descend through the quarry much lighter and with the desire to reach the base camp. When we reach the foot of the mountain, next to the main road, our porters are waiting for us and come out to greet us with hugs, to accompany us to the base camp.

Almost 14 hours after leaving this morning, we arrived exhausted and wanting to lie down in our beds and not get up until tomorrow, but we still have the return to Chukhung. We set off quickly, as it is going to be dark, and we take the road to Chukhung at a fast pace. With the headlamps on our heads and together with our porters who will guide us when night falls, we arrive at our Lodge at 6:27 p.m., 16 and a half hours of a very hard and exhausting route, but one that we will remember with pride for the rest of our lives. Some of us still have the strength to eat dinner (most go straight to bed) and chat over a flask of malt whiskey reminiscing about the hours before.
