Itinerary description
Beautiful route heading to Lac de Montoliu, past the interesting remains of the Mines d'Urets and the Refuge lireu del Pòrt d'Urets to summit Tuc de Maubèrme (2882m). Loop back by the Estanhets de Maubèrme and down crossing the extensive meadows of the Planheth deth Pas Estret and the majestic Plan deth Tor.
Parking and start point at era Lana - past the town of Bagergue, towards “Bòrda dèra Lana". From here the first 5km follows a dirt road winding its way up the valley to the left side of Arriu d'Unhòla. It is possible to drive this section with a 4x4 but the track is quite narrow and there are few places where you can turn around, so you have to be careful.
Shortly before the Cabana des Calhaus and after the waterfall of the Saut des Calhaus up close, I leave the track and take a path to the right (N, rock landmarks) that climbs steeply up an open, grassy slope until at the remains of a rock construction, the path continues steeply up N/NE (landmarks) and ends up on a path where the GR signs pass. Further on, the path turns to the NE and, when it makes a marked bend to the left, I turn off on a path to the right (landmarks) that continue to the N/NE to the magnificent Lac de Montoliu.
At the lake, I skirt the right-hand (east) side on a beaten path to the E end, where I follow an old path (E/NE, landmarks) that climbs along the right side of a stream running into Lac de Montoliu. Further up, continue without a very defined path through open and grassy terrain that goes past the entrances of some of the many zinc and lead mines (there are up to 24 entrances) and then up an old ramp to reach the GR trail. From here you can do a short out-and-back to the main building ruins of the Mines d'Urets.
Returning to the GR, the path continues to the NW along a ledge that has some mild exposure then rises to connect to the old mine lane (you can still see sections of the old tracks). I backtrack here to check out the three small tunnels dug into the mountain where the mine lane clearly runs. Shortly after continuing I arrive at Port d'Urets, where is situated a very unique hexagonal wilderness hut made of stone and wood. At this time access is free and open - the hut is very well maintained and contains a stove and sleeping platforms, it is even stocked with bottled water and soup cartons. The rocks in this area are worth stopping to check out as well - beautiful red and blue colors and quartz.
From this pass, the trail goes W until an undefined pass where I leave the GR signs to do the out and back trip to Mauberme summit. The trail is clear and well-marked, steep at sections and with loose rock. Tuc de Maubèrme (2882m), has beautiful 360º view over a large part of the Pyrenees and several large rock cairns. Return the same way to the undefined “pass” and resume the GR trail, which in sections fades into the grassy slopes and emerges to the W, descending to and past the the Estanhets de Maubèrme. After the last pond, the trail (NO, GR signs) continues to descend, crossing the broad grassy slopes then turns to the right near a ravine, going up a bit until after crossing the ravine is an inconspicuous fork in the paths where I leave the GR and head down through open and grassy terrain following a faint path and rock markers.
I leave this to move without a path in a short cut directly to the meadow below and the Camí de Liat track/dirt road. Shortly after connecting to track you can see a wooden stake that marks the start of a trail on the right, also signposted with GR signs. The route crosses the meadows to the S and crosses the Arriu d'Unhòla two or three times in a row. Soon the path (stakes and GR signs) passes next to the small Estanhet deth Tor and soon after starts to descend (SE/S, GR stakes and signs) through a grassy ridge that to the beginning of the wide pasture area of the majestic Plan deth Tor.
The trail can be unclear at times but (S/SE, stakes and GR signs) crosses the immense plain at the W end of it (in the middle of the plain there are water pools and ditches). The path then climbs just a few meters on the right side of the river as it turns into a waterfall. I followed this to view the falls then crossed at the bottom to climb back up for a closer look at the other side. The red rock behind the water falling is stunning. Here I follow the clear path and GR signs back to the Camí de Liat road and continue down to complete the loop.
NOTE: my garmin watch recorded the distance as 28km and 1662m elevation gain - just for reference for planning as the wikiloc recording is not as accurate.

Intersection
6,247 ft
Cabana des Calhaus
Shortly after the Cabana des Calhaus there is a rock cairn and faint path to the right indicating the route up.
Waypoint
8,346 ft
Summit intersection
Right to do the out and back Mauberme summit, left/middle GR trail to continue loop down
Intersection
7,648 ft
Left off GR trail
Look for rock cairns on grassy slope, shortly after a faint path develops. Also possible to cross the ravine before the path turns up and directly connect rather than do the more circuitous route I did on this section
