Itinerary description
Park and start at the Espitau de Vielha, following a clear trail through the beautiful Bosquet des Faus and climbing to the stunning blue Estanh Redon. From the lake the route follows paths and rock markers (and with increasingly stunning views) up to the summit of Tuc deth Pòrt de Vielha (2605m). Continuing down the other side on a clear, marked path to the pass of Pòrt de Vielha, from which I did a short out and back scramble to Tuc de Montanèro (2578m). Note: This short scramble section is why I classified the route as alpine climbing rather than hiking, without adding this peak I would rate it as a moderate hiking route.
To ascend Tuc de Montanèro begin by hiking up from the pass without a defined path along the grassy slope until coming out on a ridge where you can see the short scramble section and summit right before you. There is a marked rock gap to go through and then around an exposed and aerial step. After passing the step there is a final climb following a faint path that flanks the steep ridge, leaning a little to the right (Slope E) needing some hands on scrambling - not technical but definitely exposed, until reaching the narrow summit of Tuc de Montanèro (2578m), crowned by a small summit landmark, with a great 360º panorama and sharp rock ridges.
After submitting Tuc de Montanèro I return the same way back to Pòrt de Vielha and continue down the well-marked GR along the historic Camí del Pórt passing through interesting bunkers and shelters and huge flocks of sheep. Down into the valley I added on an easy loop to the Saut de Molères which is a scenic waterfall and definitely worth the side-trip.
NOTE: my garmin watch recorded the distance as 17.3km and 1326m elevation gain - just for reference for planning as the wikiloc recording is not as accurate.
