Itinerary description
Casa da Montanha --> Pico (+ Piquinho) --> Casa da Montanha
3,5h up, 2,5h down (with good weather and going quite fast - normally it takes around 7h). There are 47 numbered poles marking the trail, it wasn't a problem to follow the path even at night with the head lamps.
The trail gets quite steep at some points, so it's good to be prepared for that if the weather is bad and it may get very slippery. It's definitely worth buying Pico + Piquinho entrance (15 + 5 EUR) as the real top (2351m) is on the smaller one and the panorama is breathtaking.
Remember that there's a day limit of people entering Pico (320 people/day as for sept. 2018), so unless it's out of the main season better start early in the morning, otherwise you can miss the opportunity. Also it's much more pleasant to climb up before sun hits you hard (especially in the summer).
Regardless of the above the best time to start climbing is late afternoon (if there's still place) to stay for the night and sleep at the crater (with a tent) or at night around 3:30-4:00 - to see amazing clear sky full of stars and be at the top for the sunrise. Definitely worth it!

Easy to follow when the visibility is good. With cloudy weather it's sometimes enough to wait a little bit to see the next pole.
