Itinerary description
La Fruitière - Refuge Russell - Pic Ardiden and return. Beautiful views and although a busy time of year, after turning off the main path to Lac d’Estom I didn’t see a single person for 7 hours! The route is fairly clear on paths until the ridge, then comfort route-finding using rock cairns is needed. I found the section from the Pourteau Des Agudes to the summit took longer than I had anticipated due to slow-going terrain. There are sections that require hands-on scrambling near the summit but if you are used to this type of terrain it is straightforward. The views along the way up and from the summit are stunning!
Note: I recommend filling up with water from the fountain at the Refuge as there wasn’t any other water source between there and the summit.

There are variations on the route up with rock markers staying mostly along the ridge and others approaching more from the gully’s to the side.
