Itinerary description
Beautiful mix of forests, lakes, scenic views and peaceful off-trail hiking.
Parking at Km 147 of the N 230 road between Lleida to Vielha. Start at Pont de Salenques following the GR 11 through a beautiful forest and along the river. The path veers left after the first few kilometres away from the Salenques ravine and towards the Estanys d'Angliós. The path is clear and switchbacks steeply up to arrive after about 5km at the Estany Gran d'Angliós. Visible on the opposite shore there is a wilderness hut possible to spend the night.
A little further up, the Gr-11 forks, I take the left up a clear trail to the Collado de Angliós, passing first next to the Estany de la Ubaga.
At the Collado are views down to the dam of the Llauset reservoir, and here I leave the GR-11 and go to my left without trail or markers, following just below the ridge towards Pic dels Bous. It is possible and very scenic to travel along the top of the ridge but this is more exposed and technical, and with the windy day I chose to avoid it and hike just below. I end up on a wide and easy slope of reddish slate to easily reach the Pic dels Bous at 2605 m. On a clear day there are extensive views of lakes and peaks (Vallibierna, Bessiberri, Mulleres, Tallada, Russell, ... )
From here it is an straightforward, wide ridge to the Pic del Cap de Rigüeño (2,592 m) with even more expansive views. You can continue to add Pic de la Sarronera and then down but this time I chose to descend the easy ridge that separates Estany Fe (left) from Estanyet del Cap de Riueno to the Colladeta de Riueno.
At the Colladeta de Riueno there is not a clear path but you can follow the rock cairns towards L'Estanyet del Cap de Riueno. Here you skirt the left hand side of the lake then continue down to the E keeping the stream at your left. While the path here is faint or non-existent the cows have most sections well-trodden and the rock route markers are frequent. Continue the descent through the valley in this fashion until about at the ruins of the Cabana de la Font Blanca (no waypoint on the map, sorry) here there is a more intermittent path that becomes clearer a little further on. As marked on the map, further down the path crossed the Barranc de Riueno and continues down the other side of the ravine in the middle of a beautiful beech forest and a established trail. This continues clearly until reaching the N-230 and small parking area about 1.5km from the start point. Here my route stops but it is easy to follow along the road back to the start point to complete the loop.
NOTE: my garmin watch recorded the distance as 15 km and 1261 m elevation gain - just for reference for planning as the wikiloc recording is not as accurate.
