Complicated excursion of combined modality, biking and trekking. The departure and arrival are in the town of Nikko, specifically from the Sanga hotel where I was staying, whose owner is the one who also rented me the mountain bike.
The 1st part is the access to Kirifuri Falls, specifically up to its viewpoint because the base cannot be accessed. There is a short 10' walk to the viewpoint, very easy and accessible. The waterfall is very beautiful, ranked among the 3 best in Nikko, but it can be seen from afar.
The 2nd part is where the interesting part begins... the Unryu Keikoku waterfalls. These accessible have nothing. First, the arrival by bicycle is very hard. I got out and parked it just before starting the uphill curves, I couldn't take it anymore. From there I continued walking along the narrow curvy road to a dam that was under construction, where the fun begins. The path is not indicated at all, and I was following a route taken in winter, made with the frozen river and using crampons, so it didn't make things any easier.
1o has to be crossed through the middle of a kind of dam to stop large stones and trees. After crossing below the aforementioned dam, the path continues up a quarry to the right (if you follow the river you will come to another series of smaller dams that prevent you from passing). Once you have cleared the 1st obstacle, you come to another dam, even bigger, which I had to do a bit of climbing, not highly recommended, surely there is another way. After that, all you have to do is follow the river to Unryu Keikoku, crossing the river several times, some of them barefoot.
I did the return along a paved road that starts at the last dam found, with a lot of curves, so it's more fun to access from the river 😅.
