Warning: this route combines mountain biking at the beginning to Spring time Campground, and from here walking-running to San Mateo Peak.
Description: Apache Kid Wilderness is an ideal area to flee from the crowds and seek refuge in solitude, a beautiful place to camp and listen to the silence. To get here, take Forest Highway 225, which is one of the main entrances to Apache Wilderness .... you can continue by car, preferably in 4 × 4 although normal cars, with a lot of patience, can make this journey. In my case, neither one nor the other, my car is so cracked that I have to take care of it and I decide to do 13 miles with my Cross bike. The ride is beautiful so I don't miss using a vehicle. The directions to the Campground are counted once you have traveled a few miles on 225. The path is practically uphill except for some false flat or downhill, which helps you to recover a little. Then we got to Springtime and chained up the bike. The sign for San Mateo Peak is very visible and following the path is practically child's play. At the end there is a watchtower for fires, which by the way, is very abandoned ... yes, you want to go up, but it is in conditions that make you go up with much respect .... the return is by the same site.
