Itinerary description
I did it back and forth starting in Ma'alea. I started at 6.25 a.m. and it was wonderful to see the sunrise on Haleakala! It took me 1h10m to get to the windmills, a little slow but the first part is rather steep and it was still dark so I had to pay attention. If you look back the view is amazing all the time. On the other side I had some shade going down and wonderful views of the ocean and Kaho'olawe and Lana'i. Further down you can also see a piece of Moloka'i. It got hotter and hotter as I descended and go back up to the windmills again was tough. No wind.
Almost back up to the windmills and all the way down I had (warm) wind again. The hike is not difficult but the sun, no shade and the rough surface makes it tough. I had only 1l water and that is not enough. I brought fruit and bread.
I started down at the intersection with the highway so I did 16,60km (900 mt uphill and downhill). If you start at the parking lot it's 10km. It took me 5h 34min (4h45min of hike).
The Ma'alea side have more views and the Pòhakula side is more green, vulcanic and dramatic.
It was lovely doing it early in the morning and see the sunrise, but I think it's nice to do it at sunset. Avoid the mid day hours...it is really hot and sunny.
