Itinerary description

Crocodile Lake with the car: in both cases, you do need a 4x4 and you drive a sand-track from the main road in Nbeika to the village Dar Assalama, it’s before the valley entrance. Here you can either park in front of the valley and walk the 3 kilometres through the valley to its end or you drive above along the valley. The first part over the sand tracks takes about 1 hour, best to reduce air pressure, there is some light bulldust. There seem to be many track options to get to the beginning of the valley.

We decided to drive above the valley. In this case, you need to find the track on the right of the valley leading up onto the rocks. The track needs another hour and has some rocks to cross, it’s well manageable with some ground clearance & conscious wheel placement. With our Pajero with only 22cm ground clearance, it’s manageable after getting out a few times and checking the rocks. In total, it’s 25 kilometres off-road.

You can’t drive directly to the lake, you park and walk the last meters above the gorge to have a look into the valley. You can also walk down into the valley from up here. The advantage coming from here is that you are elevated and see the crocodiles from the front. Best be quiet and don’t talk, they are quite shy. We went twice, once in the morning and once in the evening - we were always all alone and saw more than 20 crocs lying on the sand.
