Itinerary description
This is the 4x4 track that takes you to Salto Oshi or King George VI Falls.
A few things of note:
- The tracks crosses the border between Venezuela & Guayana. There is no border post or anything, ...
- This track is used for smuggling, especially at night. For that reason, the locals are a bit nervous when you go there(they don't like visitors..), it is claimed you need to ask for permission first. They might also ask for a "contribution"... We did not ask permissions and did not pay anything. Do with it what you want. It did not seem dangerous to us. We met a few smugglers and they were friendly.
- The track eventually ends close to the top of the falls. You will have to walk the final few hundred meters to the top of the falls. There is not really a clear track (there are very few visitors), but you'll find it easily enough. Be careful on top, it's a long way to fall down :-)
- Views from the top are not as spectacular as from the bottom. I have also created a track for the hike that takes you to the bottom of the falls. All info on the hike here: https://www.wikiloc.com/hiking-trails/salto-oshi-king-george-vi-hike-to-bottom-164326688
- At the beginning of the track, there is a closed barrier with a wall. You can just drive around the wall (to the right)
- Track requires 4x4 . Mostly sandy with some rocky bits. There is a short part that leads trough the forest with 2 small wooden bridges. It can get muddy there in the rainy season. Bridges are in good condition, but I'd say maximum 5 ton. A few overgrown areas, small vehicles will have it easier.
This information/track is about accessing these falls from Venezuela. You can also approach them from Guyana, but it will involve flying with a bushplane, and then hiking/boating for several days.
