VOLOS MUNICIPAL THEATER

The building of the Municipal Theater of Volos is the work of the architect Panos Tsolakis. It was inaugurated in 1988 and is located in R. Fereou Square. It has the largest stage in the Balkans and a capacity of about 1000 seats. The old Municipal Theater (1897) was one of the most important of its time such as Smyrna, Istanbul, Thessaloniki. Along the way, it hosted well-known artists such as Kotopouli, Nezer, Mercouri, etc. After the restoration work, it will shine again as a cradle of civilization.

MUNICIPAL MUSIC SCHOOL

The building was erected in 1882 to house the newly established bank of Epirus, Thessaly, it was differentiated by the National Bank of Greece in 1899. After the addition of 1955 demolition of the first floor. In 1984, the detailed draws began, under the supervision of the architect Katerina Vamvaios, during the sound production and the marble columns of the introduction of details, with their insertion of the variety of packages of applied applications and changes. FRENCH INSTITUTE

It was built between 1961 and 1968 according to the plans of the architect Sthenis Molfesis and the engineer Thymios Papagiannis. It housed the Volos branch of the French Institute of Athens, a school with rich educational and cultural work that ceased to operate in 2001. Today it belongs to the University of Thessaly and houses departments of the School of Economics and Management.

VOLOS GREEK SCHOOL

It is housed on the upper floor of a listed building, which is a representative sample of urban housing and architecture of Volos in the period from the end of the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. It is a donation of the couple Konstantinos and Amalias Rigas in 1932. In the area are preserved old furniture of urban houses of Volos, donations to the Lyceum of Greek Women, as well as many jewelry and textiles. In three rooms of the house are exhibited traditional authentic women's and men's costumes of the Prefecture of Magnesia and regions of Asia Minor.

POPULAR LIBRARY

It was built in 1967 to the designs of the architect Giannis Koumanoudis, on the site of the Girls' High School of Volos. It has been operating since 1981 as a lending library with more than 80,000 titles. It has a local press archive, operates a children's section and organizes cultural events, mainly book presentations.

The building of the School of Nuns, as the school of the solitary catholic order of St. Joseph prevailed, was built in 1909. Today the School continues to operate as a mixed private Primary School in a new building, as the old one was demolished after the 1955 earthquakes.

"Three Hierarchs" association was established in 1907. The core of the association's library was the library of the learned monk Zosimas Esfigmenitis. The club and the library were housed in a two-storey building at the intersection of Demitriados and Ogl streets in 1913, which was rebuilt after the 1955 earthquakes.

It was built in 1894 according to the plans of the architects Kon. and Nick. Dimadi, for the residence of the businessman Ioannis Sarafopoulos. During the Turkish occupation of Volos (1897-98) it was used as the Command of the Turks. In 1923, it was transferred to the company "Pelion Recreation and Landscaping Center". In 1937 it was acquired by the association "Volos Society Center" which was renamed "Volos Club" and still owns it. With the earthquakes of 1955 the building was severely damaged and a demolition permit was issued. After strong reactions, the lower part of the building was preserved and the floors were reconstructed based on the studies of the architects Arg. Filippidis and Kon. Stop. Later, the old masonry was added and strengthened with studies by engineer Nick. Markogiannopoulou. The reconstructed building was declared a listed building in 1994. Today, the Volos Club operates on the floors and the summer cinema "Exoraistiki" operates in the uncovered area.

ACHILLEION

It was built according to the plans of the architect from Volos, K. I. Argyris, in 1925. Initially, it operated with a silent cinema and from 1933 with a speaker. Particular features, apart from the emblematic facade, were the elongated balcony on the sides of the room and the opening ceiling, so that it can function in summer as well. In the 1990s, the protests of the citizens prevented its demolition and led to its acquisition by the Municipality of Volos.

MINERVA

The Minerva coffee confectionery first opened in 1935 and was relocated to its current location in 1962. It is attached to the pastry. EVOL sour cream, DeZaan cocoa and the traditional recipe compose the paste, whose taste, but also its name, made it known in Greece.
