Itinerary description
Roman goldmine, wine and more! : San Esteban de Valdueza – Las Medulas – Villafranca del Bierzo – Cacabelos – Balboa.
Balboa – Ponferrada – San Esteban de Valdueza ( A complete day out )
From San Esteban de Valdueza drive to Ponferrada going over Puente Boeza and then turning left at the main road, past El Castillo de Los Templarios, over the river and and then left again by the station onto N536, direction Ourense.
Keep on N536 through Priaranza del Bierzo and other villages until you reach Carucedo. (50 minutes). Turn Left here to Las Medulas (all well signposted). Go up to the Mirador de Orellan to get the best view of Las Medulas. There is a car park here. Visit Las Medulas.
After that, from Las Medulas, go back to the N536 and turn left in the direction of Ourense. Then join the N120 direction Villafranca del Bierzo which borders the Lago de Carucedo.
Continue on this until you come to a loop in the road and you join the NV1 to Villafranca del Bierzo (30 minutes)
Once you reach Villafranca del Bierzo, the mini “Santiago de Compostela” park in the main square and visit the sights – the church os San Francisco, C17th church of San Nicolas, the C16th Colegiata, the C15th castle and the unique Calle del Agua.
After Villafranca del Bierzo, take the NV1 and LE713 to the old town of Cacabelos and from there take the LE712 and drive up through the vineyards to Palacio Canedo, Prada A Tope (6kms) (22 minutes total journey).
Have a delicious lunch at Palacio Canedo, Prada A Tope to get a taste of the true fare from El Bierzo. Owned by El Bierzo’s number one “embassador” Jose Luis Prada, one time shoemaker, turned into entrepreneur. Not only is the food good, but his wines are excellent.

If you have the energy after lunch, a good end to the day is to drive back to Cacabelos and then towards Villafranca del Bierzo, joining NV1 and drive up to Ambasmestas and from there turn right to Balbao to see Las Pallozas – celtic dwellings. The ones here are now used as bars/restaurants, but they give you an idea of what life was like then! (34 minutes from Palacio Canedo).
Drive back to San Esteban de Valdueza via Ponferrada on NV1 (50 minutes).
