Itinerary description
From San Esteban de Valdueza (Hotel Valle de Silencio) drive up through the beautiful Valle del Silencio to Penalba de Santiago (30 mins). There is a public car park there at the entrance to the village.
At 1100 metres, this small, well preserved, C9th village is a delight to wander around - its main highlight is its exquisite mozarabic church. Don’t miss it or having a coffee in the quirky bar La Cantina. You can visit La Cueva (cave) de San Genadio (he founded the church), but that is a 30 minute walk from the village.
On the way down towards San Esteban, it is well worth stopping off at the village, Montes de Valdueza, where you will find the monastery of San Pedro, also founded by San Genadio before he moved up to Penalba de Santiago. Sadly, it is now in ruins, but there is a wonderful atmosphere about the place.
