Itinerary description
Niedelhorn (CH) - meringen - sustenpass - oberalppass - Breil Stockhorn - verbier
Constant lee wind at takeoff needing a very fast run to get off the hill - First to successfully take off after a failed tandem attempt. Low save in very rough conditions after only an hour left me psychologically drained, but the prospect of an outstanding day kept the motivation up.
Meringen airspace clearance obtained by telephone. Absolutely gorgeous view soon afterwards, crossing the snow-covered Sustenpass at around 3500m. Pity the camera was stolen from the van at Grenoble a week earlier. I suspected dangerously strong winds in the very deep dark and tight Goschenen valley, and had to fight hard clear the Oberalppass, knowing I would be in trouble if it didn't work out.
The imposing windmill at the top of the col was cleared and a new world opened up, I had climbed out of the dark side. The totally different silky smooth airmass in the Disentis valley was icing on the cake, and I eeked out a climb in dynamic, just enough to sustain.
After a fantastic soaring/wagga session in perfect conditions it was time to move on, day was making its retreat. Eventually I made cloudbase, drifted along from cloud to cloud while marking the various railway stations as waypoints on my GPS. The easiest but most expensive retrieve ever followed, the train turning up 5 minutes later but lightening the wallet 100 swiss francs but I didn't care.
Should've listened to that bus driver and bought that 1/2 pricecard. A long, long train ride back to the van for more adventures tomorrow.
