Itinerary description

Maybe some of my followers in Wikiloc would like to see my other passion - sailing. So I have decided to take you around Ireland's Eye, a small uninhabited (that is apart from birds, rabbits and other fauna) island just one and a half kilometres from the Howth Harbour in County Dublin. Nobody lives on the island now, but in 700ad three holy men established a Church there which existed there until the 13th century. The Vikings plundered the island in the 9th and again the 10th centuries. A Martello Tower was built in 1802 by the English to protect the area from a possible Napoleon invasion. Then in 1852 it was the scene of the infamous Kirwan murder of a young wife by her artist husband. A small island with a lot of history. There are ferries for tourists to the Ireland's Eye, and in good weather it is a nice place to spend a day, walking, on the beach or bird watching.
