The Geirangerfjord or Geirangerfjord is a fjord in the district of Sunnmøre, in the province of Møre og Romsdal, Norway. It is located within the municipality of Stranda. It is a branch of the Storfjorden and measures about 15 km in length, with a maximum width of 1.5 km.
Geirangerfjord is one of the most touristic places in the country. The town of Geiranger of about 200 inhabitants, located at the end of the fjord, receives more than 600,000 tourists each year and about 150 passenger boats that make excursions through it.
Along the fjord there are many waterfalls, such as Syv Søstrene ("Seven Sisters"), Friaren ("Pretender"). Both are face to face, one on each side of the fjord. "The Bridal Veil" (in Norwegian, Brudesløret) is another important waterfall of the same, so called because it falls delicately on a rocky edge, and when it is illuminated from behind by the sun it has the appearance of a thin veil.
There are also numerous farms, most of them abandoned, on both sides of the fjord. Some have been recently restored.
In 2005, the Geiranger Fjord and the Nærøy Fjord were declared a World Heritage Site under the name "Western Fjords of Norway".
Waterfalls
Geiranger is a small tourist town in the western part of Norway, at the head of the Geiranger Fjord, which is a branch of the Great Fjord (Storfjord). The closest city is Ålesund.
Every year the Geiranger event - From the fjord to the summit is held in June. It comprises a half marathon and a cycling race, both of which start at sea level and end at 1,497 meters above sea level, at the summit of Mount Dalsnibba.
The fjord is located at a crossroads between large mountains. In fact, it is not strange that the place is isolated in winter and can only be accessed via ferry.
If you have visited Loen, in the south of Geiranger, the most logical thing is to get to Geiranger through the beautiful mountain road of Dalsnibba. By the way, this mountain pass is free, making it the cheapest option to get there from the south.
From the north the only access there is the mythical Águila highway. The mountain pass is a constant zigzag that tests anyone's driving skills. At the top there is a nice viewpoint (free) of the entire fjord.
The boat trip is expensive and very touristy, it is true, but the beauty of the landscapes through which it passes cannot be argued. The fjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is totally impressive, due to the huge rock walls that span it on both sides, leaving you with your mouth open throughout the journey.
Also as an "extra" to the fjord, from the cruise you can also see small old villages and the most characteristic of all, the waterfalls:
