Itinerary description
Date : 2023.12.27
Duration on paper : 07h54
Duration real with breaks : 8h32
Difficulty for me : T3
Physical : difficult
Technical : difficult
Fear : average
Average Slope : +12.0% -11.7%
Attendance ascent/summit/descent : null/low/low
Comment : In the conditions we had, to do the bisse d'Ayent you needed either crampons or snowshoes with good spikes, we both had Petzl crampons so used them, without those you would have to go back after the iconic "bisse d'Ayent" 100CHF swiss bill place (need to go through low ceiling tunnel to reach it) There was a slippery frozen neve unpassable on normal shoes, lots of rock fall, ice blocks and snow avalanche all over the trail after the small tunnel in the Torrent Croix area, not secured not for beginners not for people with no gear.
Until the 1616m unamed village we didn't use our snowshoes but it became a must or you would plunge into soft snow up to your knees.
The tunnel going to Barrage du Rawil was closed and barred for pedestrians and cars, go at your own risk in winter, this whole trail is not for beginners, except the Les Rousses to Anzère return. 3 tunnels with some parts being pure ice on the ground so you better have poles or walk very slowly and carefully, you can easily injure yourself, you also need a lightsource, lamp and watch the ceiling as there are deadly icicles ready to fall on your head.Outside of them and to go at the Rawil lake you really need snowshoes or you'll struggle to walk snow is too thick and soft for hiking shoes.
Les Rousses to Anzère return is on officials snowshoes trails all marked and easy to follow.
It was very long....18km of mostly snowshoeing is hard, it's also a dark region in winter you're in the shade most of the time, better have warm clothes.
