Itinerary description
A challenging snowshoe trip to the highest Nevada mountain near Lake Tahoe. An early start was advisable as the trip could easily outlast daylight hours.
The first part of the trail to Mount Rose is to get around Tamarack Peak. I took the shorter northern "Tahoe Rim Trail" back and forth, the southern "Forest Road 051" is longer but may be better maintained thus easier.
Afterwards the trail would head to the saddle point between Mount Houghton and Mount Rose (wilderness boundary). The last section between the saddle was pretty steep. On my ascent, I deviated from the established trail by turning left(west). On my descent, I tried to follow the trail, which follows a gully. Yet the trail left the gully at an unmarked spot which was really hard to find in winter. I ended up missing that point and took quite some effort correcting my way.
After wilderness boundary, the ascent to summit followed a ridge, getting around the trees and branches in the snow is difficult. It's also pretty steep until getting out of tree line.
