Itinerary description

Snowshoe trail around Mount Olympus.

Start and finish at Sun Valley ski hut. From Sun Valley, connect to the Artemis trail using the ski connector. Follow Artemis trail to approx site of Venetian camp and then head up the dry river valley or nearby ridge to the top road near the entrance the military base on the summit. Take road or ski connector back to Sun Valley.

While we have checked this route in summer, it’s perfect for a snowshoe trek in the snow. It would be possible to do this with touring skis and skins but lot more practical (and cheaper!) in snowshoes.

Our route is a bit haphazard as it was hard to follow the trail covered in deep powder. In more usual Troodos snow conditions (icy crust), progress would be quicker and easier. Depending on snow depth/conditions, would be possible to do this route in hiking boots and using poles. As the Artemis trail is narrow with steep sides, would not attempt this route in the snow without using poles.

Enjoy!

We overshot the turnoff to head to the summit. The trail is noticeably steeper and narrow and not great in deep snow. You would have another 2.5km of similar terrain to cover if you followed Artemis all the way round Olympus.
